The best moment was when he tried to run from one of them and the puppy jumped on him and knocked him down. And before you judge me for laughing, he had his hood on so he couldn't see what had knocked him down. He jumped back up somewhat dazed and went right on running.

I read this book in a day. Which with fiction is not odd for me. Non-fiction however...

This book covers all the conspiracies, stories, backgrounds, and history of one of the most notorious happenings in our history. Like Manhunt, it almost reads as a mystery novel. Fast paced, engrossing and too absurd to be real. So many historians, biographers and conspiracy theorists have hashed and continue to research this time in history. And still, no one can say for sure if James Earl Ray acted alone.

This author also wrote Blood and Thunder.

I had made it my goal to pick up books that looked interesting and books that had NOT been recommended to me. I LOVE this time period so I was of course instantly drawn to this book. I think my love started while on vacation with my grandparents, we were able to visit Tombstone, AZ and hear all about the outlaws and their famous shoot out. I think that they may have even done a reenactment of the O.K. Corral? (could be imagining that)

Anyway, this book highlights the women that ran with or were associated with the Wild Bunch Gang. Only about 120 pages, it chronicles their lives and contributions to the gang. Because there is not a lot known about these women the book is sparsely sourced but informative. Who doesn't like to read about bad ass, gun wielding women? Who may or may not have sketchy prostitute pasts?

Of course I had to watch my two favorite westerns after finishing the book. I do love a good gun fight! Oh, and Paul Newman and Robert Redford.

Tombstone, possibly my first "R" movie ever seen. I'm gonna as far as to say I saw it with my Gpa Strayer. Awesome movie.

I am almost embarrassed to tally up how many books I've read since leaving Borders in Sept. Instead I will tell you that my love of non-fiction has finally blossomed. I enjoyed a good NF book before but I've developed not only a love for biographies and history books but the capacity to focus on them. I just think I didn't have the time or patience to sit and truly appreciate them.

Since my uncle and aunt bought a cabin at Sundance we decided it would be a good time to take up snowboarding. We've had a really dry winter for Utah. Luckily, the day we went it was snowy, beautiful and not terribly busy.
Love! the Strayers for letting us borrow all their snow clothes. And for the tips from Susan who totally knows what she's doing.

Our Mumsy

1- I am so proud of her for going back to school to get her Masters! ...and one day her Ph.D...and for graduating from college at all.
2- She is someone who has always worked hard to better her life and circumstance.
3- I remember in our 1680 S house, one night she had us all get our swimsuits on, turned on the Beach Boys, made us lemonade and let us swim in her bathtub jacuzzi. So fun as a kid

4- Changing her name back to Strayer. I know she waited a long time to change her name. I also know how much she wished Grandpa was still alive to appreciate it.

5- I am often surprised by her. I assume I know my mom well enough to guess what she'll say or how she'll react to something and often I am wrong. (2Pac, missions etc.)

6- She does not give up on family. Some years ago when my brother was a major pain in all our asses, so often even those who loved him asked my mom to just give up. Let him be. She did not, she continued to love, help and pray for him. Although he did all the hard work in changing his life I truly believe she saved his life.

7- She has aged so well. Please oh please let her almost 50 yr. old skin be genetic!

8- I love that she is bossy. This is a quality that took me a long time to appreciate :) and maybe it's more of a delegation appreciation. But she gets the job done. This quality manifests itself in her career, church callings and personal life.

9- I think our voracious appetite for reading was instilled in us by her. We always got books in our Easter baskets, we always read at night and for family home evening. (Tennis Shoes Series!) Even when our tastes were somewhat unrefined *cough*Anita Stansfield *cough* we were always encouraged to keep reading.

10- She is a mom that let me be me. I don't quite know how to put it into words. I was never pushed to do anything because I was (fill in the blank)... a female, a blonde, an LDS kid, a good soccer player. My friends are my friends, my choices are my choices, my hobbies are my hobbies, my life is my life.

11- Mom is laid back
12- She always helps out
13- She is generous (I'll need help w/ January's rent, btw)
14- She is sarcastic (this is a good thing, I swear!)

Birthday Ponderings

Today felt strange. I am officially in my late 20's and I've got a lot of stuff that is sort of up in the air right now.

The day itself was wonderful. Breakfast with my sister, SLC trip for make-up, London goodies and a bookstore stop. We had yummy Korean food for lunch, an hour long massage, and an amazing 4-tiered rice krispy cake with the Strayers.

It's funny because I was so anti Facebook for so long but it was sweet to get all those birthday messages people left on there all day. I head out to P-ville for a week tomorrow and I could not deserve it more. It's been a looong month and I need some rest, a little time to update my resume, and my mom to myself. ;)

Today I talked with a man who shared some thoughts and feelings about life that I needed to hear. I am awed at how poeple come into your life at just the right moment. I may never see this man again but his love for others and life truly touched me.

I will strive to help those in need. People always say "the Lord will find a way". We are the way. People who say that often just dont want to be the ones to do the helping. And I will strive to be more aware of the needs of others and to be that person to help find a way.

I love my family.

Wedding Dress Shopping

I cannot lie, the thought of dress shopping chills me to the bone. ANY girl that has gone prom, graduation, wedding dress shopping knows that it has the potential to go down hill fast. When KayCee asked if I could go with her I was excited(!) and nervous about the entire situation.

KayCee was wonderful. In a great mood which helps, listened to all feedback, was opinionated about what she liked which really helped her shop helper lady. Also it needs to be said that some of those girls who were trying on dresses at the same time should have brought people that would be honest with them. Truly. Those girls are going to see pictures of themselves and think "Who let me buy this?!" And for cryin' out loud brush your hair and throw on a little lip gloss before you go wedding dress shopping.

I'm just happy for KayCee. Y'all know I'm not a gushy lovey sort of person but KayCee became a best friend just when I needed a best friend. I count 3 people who came in to my life just when I needed them and I am so grateful for those friendships...most especially KayCee cause this blog has her in it. :)

Yeah, so what, I got tired of writing with the frosting, hence the lopsided B-Day.

We went laser tagging with Michael for his birthday. The best part was getting invited to play with the "regulars" They play every Wednesday, with louder music, dark arenas and some crazy ace kids. As soon as this one boy started strapping on his knee pads I knew we were in trouble. And indeed we were, I imagine they invited us as sort of a target practice.

The Kings Speech

Usually I don't care who wins at the Oscars, I'm there for the red carpet event and to cringe at the host's horrible jokes and gags. THIS year however I was team Kings Speech all the way. I loved the two mens relationship, they had great chemistry, the humor was there, the frustration, by the end you needed him to get it right. It was painful to watch him speak like that. If you haven't seen it, see it. It has an R rating that they are trying to get down to a PG-13 because there is no sex, no violence, and only to incidents of language. AMAZING! My love for Colin Firth holds strong. Kudos to Kings Speech for sweeping the Oscars.

My prayers are with Mr. LaCara's family, the staff and students at Schnell and the little town of Placerville. As I hear stories of what happened today, I am so thankful for the competent staff of Schnell and PUSD.
Mr. LaCara, I remember how kind he was to me my first and only year at Markham. I had just moved from Utah, and everyday for the first couple of weeks there he was when I got off the bus making sure I was doing okay, that I was caught up in my classes and that no one was giving me any grief. What a great educator.

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows

See it in IMAX! I love my ginger Ron, he is hilarious and the least ick! out of the child actors. You know what I mean, Harry and his hobbit habits, Hermoine and her terrible fake laughing. (shiver) I love how they decided to tell the story of the Deathly Hallows. Snape was for the first time terrifying to me, that first scene with him marching into Malfoy manor. I will not deny that I had a bit of a reaction when Harry and Hermoine start to dance. (I'm laughing right now as I think about it) It totally through me off, Harry starts to shimmy to some groovy R&B beats and I started to giggle. Yes, I am too old to find that uncomfortable but Harry, to me, is a creepy hobbit in the movies... it turned out okay. (sigh, shiver, ick!)

I read book 7 in 24 hrs. AND I had to work. Oh I know, I sound like a crazy person but it was so worth having the book fresh in my head when I saw this. When they skipped over a part in the movie I could just fill in the blanks with scenes from the book. So fresh and so clean!

Why oh why did I go walking tonight? It was freezing, icy(I slipped of course), and it snowed on me. At least I didn't get hit in the face with a soda tonight. Sadness. Shoulda stayed inside where it smells like Christmas and watched Castle. Shoulda. Woulda. Coulda.

I'm sad that everyone's at the Villa, with a wonderful full week off and I am stankin' it up in freezing cold Provo. Oh I miss you hot tub.

The Best Two Years

It's strange talking and being with these guys now. Tacy is so much more introspective and Michael is an adult. They're both still silly and strange and make me laugh so freaking hard but it's different. The mission is behind them now and now they make choices that will continue to change the rest of their lives. College, marriage, jobs. I've missed them and love seeing their smiley faces and love hearing about their experiences that have shaped who they are now.

Points for me, I did not cry when I saw them. I might have if I had been at the airport when they first got home, all that build up and a crying mom...:) I could see myself getting worked up then.

So I have no idea why I never post about the books I'm reading. I shall start today by saying that I will not be reading the newest JP book that came out Monday. J'ai mal à la tête.

( just googled how many books he's written, 65! Does that number include the 2, that's right 2, that came out today? Also, feeling sort of bad that I constantly rant about him, especially since he has this reading program for kids encouraging them to get into the habit of reading for fun. Sheesh! I suck. - My week was good. Trying to kick this cold/ear infection (inserted my own self diagnosis) has made me tired. And you know how I hate napping, it makes me feel like I'm missing something. Also, heard from the Dr. everything is a-okay. No surprise, there are a million Kim C.'s living here and there was a mix up. Terrifying thought had this not been a billing issue and more of a diagnosis issue.

- Work is exhausting, details when my phone is back in agreement with you. I am ready to come home for some R&R (Oct.20-29th I think I'll fly in the night of the 19th). My last "vacation" not related to seeing G-pa was going to Ashland which as you recall was not so relaxing i.e. driving with an insane woman.

- Roommates are still great. Everyone does there own thing which I am learning is awesome. I am still the only one to do trash etc. BUT they are clean so there is never really anything to clean.

- Still laughing about how you remember my JEM obsession. There could be no better themed costume group as JEM and The Holograms and their enemies The Misfits!

- I had just watched The Office season premiere when we talked and wanted you to get online and watch it. Seriously you don't have to be caught up to watch this. Could.Not.Stop.Laughing.

- Want to send you some $ to put in Michael's account as I would love something very French. And that was our agreement, something French = something green in his acct. Tres amusing.

- Did I tell you I heard from Matt W? Very nice.

Being quite the fan of the Kevin Costner version of this movie (that witch still gives me nightmares) I was not sure what to expect.
As I did not hear half of the movie, combination I am deaf, loud talking and them all being British, I still don't quite have the whole gist of it. I shall watch it again.
What I do remember liking... this whole remake of old movies with more realistic...umm... things. I can't think of the right word. :) For instance when they have a fight scene in the water at the end the ocean around them is saturated with blood. Realistic. In Casino Royale, instead of jabbering on in those first couple of moments James Bond just kills the man. That is what James Bond should do. Does this make me blood thirsty? I do seem to like violent movies, (although Die Hard was not my fav, sorry Cheyne)
The part where the old man is blind and fights off the bad guy makes me cry, they had that scene in the KC version. Has anyone read the book? I would be interested in knowing the "true" story, some of the details in this new movie make sense and I can see why the other versions might leave them out. (scandalous Marion Loxley for one)

Much Restraint

I feel like I have shown remarkable restraint not blogging about driving out here in Utah. Alas, today is the day.
As I drive home from work on a one lane road, this giant SUV (of course) comes zooming on past the right of me, trying to pass. I can't speed up, I can't slow down due to the charming bumper riders in Utah, so I straddle the divide hoping I don't hit oncoming traffic. As I beep my horn, not angrily mind you, hoping this guy just didn't see me (yeah right) he throws ME the finger, and zooms on past.
"Oh yes you jerkhole, let your little BYU flag wave in the wind with pride, show off that BYU window decal as you no doubt run down all those BYU students crossing the streets. Yes, you must have somewhere important to be, to risk the lives of all those around you, but really it's just so you can get one spot ahead in the traffic line." "Yes, you should cover you face with your hand so I can't see it in the side mirror because LOOK I've been following for a bit and that must mean you live in one of those family homes in my neighborhood. Awesome! Lucky for you I am a good driver and will not accidentally hit your kids as they cross the street to school, but someone else like YOU might."
In the end, as he slowed, a wink, thumbs-up and the mouthing the word CLASSY at him did the trick. What a jerkhole. Welcome to the terrifying driving world of Utah folks. You risk your life everyday, I kid you not.
On the positive side, after that encounter I was not shaky and I did not have to pull over and throw-up. So YAY progression.

I cannot tell you how much I loved this movie. Such an odd pairing of actors but it worked and I laughed through the whole thing. Mark Wahlberg, aka the guy who shot Derek Jeter, uses my favorite work phrase " I want so bad to punch you in the face right now", which I have never said to an employee in seriousness, just whispered in the back office with longing. I just loved it. My favorite Will F movie is Elf, and his character in this is right up there with Elf. A fun movie that brings to light in an amusing way the perils of corporate greed. Tres interesting.

"No one to tell us no, or where to go. A whole new world!" I need everyone to imagine this entire post with me singing it, like in a musical. (yes, imagine!) Starting......Now.
So my new roommate is officially in! I know that I talk about this ALL the time. And I know that many of you are ready for me to be past this already. And I will be. But for now it is still a time of celebration for me. A time of peace, a time of bleach, a time of cleanliness, and a time of fresh starts. WOOT! WOOT!

Dishes are done after we use them. No ones school crap everywhere. Trashes are emptied by more than just me and all parking spots are free! No more hiding our stuff so it won't get consumed, I was woken the other day by someone who vacuumed.

The living room is tidy so anyone can come over. The garage is cleared of all but OUR stuff (see ya Craig's crap). Cupboards are organized, there are no missing TP surprises, and....and....and.... I love it!!!!!!!

No gross food stuck to the counter. No gross food piled high in the sink. No gross smell coming from the garbage.

It's cool when it should be cool, it's warm when it needs to be warm.

1- Thanks to one of my favorite author's blog, and Netflix instant play on my Wii I officially love Friday Night Lights. Good looking football players, a great family story, great music, and the ability to turn it off/on whenever I need to. Woot!Woot! Instant play!

Do Not Read This If You Have Not Finished Mockingjay!

2- Now that I am not dealing with the hysteria that is every bookstore in Utah County running out of this book, I feel like I can objectively comment on this book. Working where I work I get to hear all the likes and dislikes of the series. The biggest complaint (made, mind you, by the same hormonal women who "follow" Twilight) was there was not enough time spent on the Katniss/Peeta/Gale story. To this I say, of course! because that's not the real story. Much like the final book in Harry Potter, this series is about rising above tragedy, the aftermath of war and survival. I could not be more pleased with how it turned out. I've also heard complaints on how Katniss acts and is portrayed in this final book. Look inside yourself, if you experienced everything this girl and her society and family went through, it would be abnormal NOT to go through bouts of depression and hysteria and paranoia. Come on people! This is a great commentary on not accepting every thing you are told, about questioning yourself and your government and really learning to make your own choices. So good.

3- Eminem and Rhianna- Love The Way You Lie, here I sit playing it over and over and over

Along those same lines, hearing this song inspired me to pull about my The Chronic 2001 album. Brilliant! My not so closet love of hip-hop is personified in this album. Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg together make me happy. "Still hitting them corners in them low low's girl", which also reminds me of a great scene in Scrubs

Along, along those same lines, lines, I love when my itunes shuffle gets it exactly right. Every song is perfect for my mood. No need to press next, it's just right. It's up LOUD and that makes it a great day!

4- Home grown peaches. Yum!

5- Realizing Tacy and Michael will both be home soon. Tacy in about a month and Michael a month and a half. It's gonna be buck when they get home!

My Late Twenties

As I enter my late twenties(!) I just appreciate all that I have been blessed with and all that I've learned.
- Do not buy underwear in the same size pants as you wear. They will be HUGE! Ditto leggings.
- Laughing out loud is THE best way to have a great day.
- I have truly great people in my life. Family, friends, coworkers, and roommates.
- ALWAYS use the term "hun" when addressing someone who you are unsure of their gender. Using Mr. and finding out they're a mom is no bueno. True story.
- Sleep is good. And someday you will not be able to stay up all night and then go to work at 6am (I mean you can but I am definitely not functioning and there is no perk). Eventually it all catches up to you.
- Appreciate everyone you have in your life.
- Standing up for yourself is great. And knowing that it is okay to say no is even better.

I would like to say I was demure and gracious about coming into work with these surprises at my desk. In actuality there was much jumping and stomping and excitement. Thank you everyone for making my day wonderful!
Also, I have a birthday twin at work. My co-worker Eric also turned 26 today, he promised that since we are birthday twins someday we can come dressed up to work as twins. Oh yes, I will be remembering this promise.

Something I have found out as each birthday approaches, it is so easy to be all " It's my birthday, why don't I treat myself to....(fill in the blank)" Thus my two, yes, two new pairs of boots. It's a sickness, do not judge. They're cute though, yeah?

My friends are so great and were kind enough to wait until I got off work to take me to dinner. They/We were ravenous by the time I showed up. Of course I picked PIZZA!

Another thing learned, with bangs must wash hair more often. Gross! I know.

Laura has a habit of taking super flattering pictures of Rob.KayCee and Laura. KayCee came down from her new place in SLC for the late night dinner, mucho appreciated!

The Kemptons, honestly the best people I know. And I'm not just saying that because I know they read my blog. Thoughtful, kind, generous, and FUN!

They can't help themselves.

Oh JP, please stop "writing". Please stop this madness you call a career. Sure in the beginning you had a lot going for you, like most genre writers your first couple of books were interesting and new. "What a grand idea!" people whispered to each other in libraries and book stores around the world. Unfortunately, like so many others before you, the word market saturation was lost in the abyss of "your" words. It's becoming sad really. I apologize to the people who read my blog and hear this rant every week when one of his books come out. My other beef with him? "Crossing Genres" You are not Bill Bryson, if you're going to insist on publishing books at least keep it to one genre.

How do we define the grieving process? What's acceptable? Do I care if my grieving process is considered acceptable? I know I don't want to be the nut job down the hall unable to move on with life. (don't be alarmed my life is moving) We talk all the time about life after death, and how happy our loved ones must be on the other side. But no hints are given to those of us left behind with gaping holes in our lives.
I find now that it's just moments that are hard rather than the days that used to be never ending.
Waking up from a dream and discovering my tears. Sunday nights, when I think about calling him for our weekly call. Knowing that soon Tacy and Michael will be home. Just moments. Just missing him today.
I want to ask them "Is it just me?!", but I don't want to tear at those gaping holes.

An Empty House

EEE! I've had the house to myself for going on 3 days now. For those of you that have gone the roommate route you know how absolutely wonderful this feeling is. I want to use the word giddy but that makes me possibly seem sad in some way, so I'll say relaxed. Logic reasons that I should use this time to clean or do my laundry or something along these lines. And yet, here I sit with my loud music, my stinky food, my favorite movies and TV shows in my pj's all day. No judgements on my sometimes lame/immature choices, nope just me and me and me and me.
To clarify why this is awesome...this NEVER happens for me. We have the ever rotating roommates in the basement who aren't here but for sleep but there is always A(singular, specific) roommate that is always here. This is magical, and wonderful, and all things lazy combined.

Swimming With Big E

It's official, there is a secret society of motherhood. People of course just assume that because you're at the pool with a small child that child is yours. Safe assumption. But what I found baffling was how helpful and conspiratory these mother groups are. For instance, we got to the pool while they were still having swim lessons and apparently you can't enter the pool area before swim lessons are over. So Big E and I are hanging out in the park, and this mom with all of her kids just divulges a big 'ol secret to us. We can go in there, it's "open swim" and they're not taking roll, and if anyone happens to stop us to say we're with her group. Insane right? (I did feel a little guilty and so of course bought not needed water bottles at the concessions to "pay" for our stolen time)

The other thing of note, I find myself suspicious of the old people at the pool who want to talk about the kid you're with. Like cut it out creeper we just want to get on this slide and you're in our way! Creep out the kids you're with and don't bother Big E, he's on a mission to conquer this pool.

Also, due to not really knowing how to handle the whole "I have to go the bathroom, but I have this toddler with me?" situation I had to pee like a mother by the time I got home. Don't you judge me but for half a second I thought about peeing in the pool. Then I remembered that I am a pool germaphobe and was appalled at my own thought process.

I had no intention of seeing this movie. The trailer did not lure me in with its awesomeness, and it was unclear what the movie was even about.(p.s. you will not get any hints from me.) Alas, my friend Rob spoke so strongly about loving this movie, and then just "made" us go. It was unbelievable! I was of course fidgeting for the first bit while they were setting up the story, but by the end I was like on the edge of my seat, sweating, and ready to have my mind blown.

I can't give anything away. I feel like this was how all those Matrix nuts felt. And best of all the two people I thought would make me want to bang my head against the seat, Leonardo DiCaprio and Ellen Page, were surprisingly not so annoying as they usually are.

They had so many amazing masks, I bought two. I must now have a masquerade ball.

They do this outside dancing show twice a day. My favorite performer was the Ron Weasley look alike. (seen here with green stretchy pants on)

We saw a musical show of Great Expectations, I cried through the whole thing. Pip's voice was unbelievable. We saw Pride and Prejudice, it was performed how it should be...HILARIOUS! I just saw it up at the Ashland Shakespeare Festival and this was just so much better. The guys who played Mr. Collins, got it just right.

I'm officially calling my mom brown bear. :)

I am anticipating heading over to Costco and pick up the 20, yes 20, rolls of film that I dropped off yesterday. I don't know what's on them but I love the surprise of unseen pictures. I haven't yet found my film from mine and g-pas trip to Boston circa 2005(?!), so I'm hoping that's in there.
